Internships and Volunteer Placements
You will be living in a safe, clean, simple room at the school. This is the same place where our trainers and some staff are staying. Each room has its own bathroom.
The school is 150m from the town market. There are number of local restaurants/cafeterias nearby where you can get some snacks or drinks like iced coffee, tea or soda. Tea and coffee cost around 1,000 Riel per glass which is about 25c (in USD), soda costs 1500 Riel (37c USD).
You can eat at a local restaurant including breakfast. Most restaurants provide cooked dishes which you can select from the pots displayed inside the glass-fronted cabinet.
For breakfast, local people normally eat noodle soup or rice with pork ribs or BBQ chicken wings. It costs around $1.50 USD. If you prefer to make your own tea or coffee at school, we have an electric pot for staff/volunteers. Just buy your preferred tea or instant coffee from the shop nearby.
For lunch or dinner, the price is the same. It costs around $1.50 USD per meal. In the evening, you can also have desert or fruit shake in the street for around $1.00.
There are a few Starmarts (convenience stores) in the area, where western snacks and drinks can be purchased.
Clothes can be washed and ironed at 1500 Riel per pair of clothes (shirt+trousers, shirt+skirt or similar). The laundry about 5 minutes walk from school.
You will be given a local phone/SIM card to use but you need to bring your own phone with you. If your phone is locked, we can help you to unlock in Phnom Penh.
There are many pharmacies/drugstores around if you need basic medicines. There are doctors and a hospital in town, our staff can help with translation if required. In Phnom Penh (2 hours drive) there are foreign, English-speaking doctors available.
You can ride a bicycle around town, we have bicycles available for our foreign staff. You may like to play volleyball with students or neighbours, go swiming in the lake or visit pagodas and historical sites at Tamok House or orphanage centers.
There are a few historical and natural sites where you can go to on the weekend such as Phnom Da, Phnom Chiso, Phnom Tamao, Phnom Byong Kor or Vietname and Cambodia Boarder much more. You also can go to the beach, Kep and Kampot (1.5hrs by Taxi).
Or you can go to visit the capital city, Phnom Penh. It’s 1.5 hrs to 2 hrs by Taxi. Our local staff will help you for this arrangement.
The ESS program offers a cultural experience for foreign interns or volunteers. While teaching at an ESS campus, interns and volunteers will gain a unique insight of Cambodian culture working and interacting with local people.
Participants will be able to have a weekend off for travelling plus some days off during public holidays when they can visit natural and historical sites around the area or travel through Cambodia.
Participants will get full support both for living and teaching in Cambodia. We have both foreign and Khmer staff who are experienced in supporting international teachers to work and live in Cambodia. You will also be given free accommodation with WIFI and meals covered at our dormitory for students, you will be given authentic Cambodian food.
Participants will be given full support through teaching orientation and training by our foreign qualified trainers before engaging in our classrooms. Teachers will be given regular support for lesson planning, training, and coaching. You will be teaching approximately 5 to 6 hrs per day for 5 days per week over 12 weeks.
While living and traveling in Cambodia, we have experienced Khmer staff to help you with your travel planning. You are given support/advice before and after arrival.
At our schools, we have 24-hour internet/WIFI access. There are a few desktop computers that you can use to prepare and print your lessons if you do not have your own laptop. If possible, please do bring your own laptop, as the desktop computers are limited in number.
