Can I get into japan with a criminal record (bad checks 6 years ago) 5 days during spring break. Got passport.

I had bad checks around 6 years ago. I didn't go to jail or anything, but got arrested and paid some fines and what not. I know it is on my record. I applied for a passport and got on no problem. I 'm only going for 5 days to visit a friend who lives there during spring break. I'm a college student. I called around to the Japan consulate here in U.S. and in Japan. They all say the same thing "it's up to the imigration agents when you arrive) I am not going to lie on the form they give you on the plane, I'll check yes to "have you ever been arrested" and just be honest with the guy at the gate. Will they make me go back home? If so what will I do that night? Do they put into a holding jail or anything while you are waiting? Will I get in trouble in the U.S. when I come back for not being allowed into Japan? I'm nervous because this is my first time out of the U.S. and I don't want anyproblems. We are leaving Friday. Please give me some advice for someone that actually knows
