The Nagoya Players present The Government Inspector
By:Cameron Smith <nagoyaplayers@gol.com>

The Nagoya Players are proud to present The Government Inspector by Nikolai Gogol.

It will be performed on November 18th and 2pm and 7pm, and November 19th November 2pm and 6pm 2006, at the Aichi Arts Centre Mini-theatre in Sakae, Nagoya.

Tickets are 2000 yen (students 1800 yen) advance, 2500 yen (students 2000 yen) on the door. Tickets may be reserved on-line at tickets@nagoyaplayers.info, or you can call the Aichi Arts Centre Playguide on 052 972 0430.

It begins in a bordello and ends in a brawl. In between, Gogol’s famous, outrageous comedy of corruption comes to Nagoya in a sharp new English translation and adaptation.

In a small town miles from anywhere, the devious schemeing mayor is warned by a friend that a government inspector is coming in secret to investigate them. They panic. How do they stop the inspector finding out about the psychotic and perverted school teachers, the drunken police chief, the piles of dead bodies at the hospital and the systematic extortion and imprisonment of anyony trying to work honestly?

At the same time, a mysterious well-dressed young man is staying in the local hotel, watching everyone like a hawk and paying for nothing. Thinking they have found their "secret inspector" the mayor and his friends feed brandy, caviar and several extremely large bribes. Alas, they have picked the wrong man, a vain, egotistical fantasist only too happy for people to treat him as "someone special".

Fuelled by drink, lust and money, the action careers towards a comic, dramatic finale.

Prepared especially for performance in Japan, this version includes straightforward language, and a simple, universal plot, as well as much visual and verbal humour.

The talented cast of 18 is drawn from nine different countries: the US, Japan, Canada, South Africa, the UK, Ireland, Italy, France and Australia.
