What to bring?!?! + tech Q
By:RemyArgo <pjhan3@gmail.com>

hey all,

Applying for the EPIK 2010 school year and fairly confident i'll get in (knock on wood!) and I'm trying to determine what I'll need to bring. basically, planning in advanced will help with keeping overhead low (v buying everything i need the night before!)

(Some of these questions might sound silly- I know a bit about what to bring to China as I did some research on that topic last year and base my Qs around these-ish)

(also, I plan on, though as I know it not a guarantee, on being either in Jeju or Gwangju)

-will I need to bring deodorant/a can opener?
-is flour/yeast readily available?
-are ovens generally supplied with housing?
-is rolling tobacco readily available?
-how cheap (and yes, cheap, compared to Chicago) are cigs?
-how cheap is hiking/camping gear in korea? don't really need specifics on this one
-how cheap are used bikes?
-i'd like to bring my electric guitar- is that doable without an assload of hassle/fees?
-how much are amps?
-should i consider investing in a netbook? (see below)
-also, in terms of fashion, whats the word with dr. martens? doable or will i be shunned from social functions due to my unwitting faux pas?

Thanks in advance!

Also, a tech question-

I need some help with a small conundrum-

I'm considering buying a netbook. I already have a laptop (sony vaio vgn-n365e ; <3 yrs old). Is it worth it?

The Vaio's still tickin and working fine to date (with the exception of shtty Vista internet, etc). However, I'm going overseas (Korea, Asia) for 1-2 years and might require something a bit more portable (I generally don't mind the weight [8? 10? lb- and i carry it around a lot so i've become accustomed to the weight] but can imagine it getting to be a drag/imagine that its more prone to damage due to its larger size), esp considering airports, customs etc. I plan on doing a bit of traveling and def would like to have the ___book around.

If I do make the purchase, it'd be my main stop for all my computing needs for the next 1-2 years; I have my reservations in terms of performance, worth, etc.

Current sys -
dual boot w/ vista/ubuntu
2 gHz Core Duo
1 Gig RAM
~120 Gig HD space, partitioned
16"? 17"? screen

In terms of price- < $400, but I wouldnt need it until feb 2010, so i can wait for those tightwad friendly holidays, ie x-mas/black friday/cyber thurs

Will definitely consider refurb, etc. (not used)

Uses- mainly internet, skype, video (ie DVD, youtube etc) music, word processing, some pic/vid/music editing, adobe, misc progs (ie arcgis, rosetta stone, etc), etc.

Not a big gamer

I've seen the Asus EEEPC 1005H and it seems like a good deal, but with funds being a core issue, I'm wondering if it'd be worth it, to shell out the extra cash for a netbook when others may have/I would get along fine with my current laptop? (think cost-benefit) I plan on doing moderate traveling

Again, I've been carrying around laptops on a fairly reg. basis for the last X years (the current sys is the lighter of the 2) and have become somewhat accustomed to it. But, again, I do plan on traveling to both metro and remote locations so.....
