Learn French Part I - Five Tips to Help You Learn French
By:Josette Martin

Learning another language is an adventure: you don't really know where the learning will carry you. It is a process in motion, one that you hopefully will carry on as a lifelong experience. Once you have made the initial encounter with the language your awareness should kick in and you will be noticing your new language in many places.

Following are a few tips to keep in mind when you learn French

1. Keep a notebook and record notes, new words and expressions. This is your own notebook so make it user-friendly and organize it in a way that works for you.

2. Practice your language consistently and daily. Set time aside to review vocabulary, grammar concepts, your notes and new words and expressions; set time aside to listen and get some audio exposure.

3. Seek exposure to French as much as possible. Listen to radio programs, newscasts, music; watch t.v. programs, watch films in French. Find a French club if possible and chat with people in French as often as possible.

4. Focus on good pronunciation. Find a good teacher who will help you with accurate pronunciation and a good rhythm. There is no greater encouragement than noticing that you sound good when you speak another language or receiving a compliment for your excellent accent!

5. Build up your vocabulary by reading, paying attention to signs, advertisements. Increase your vocabulary by developing your awareness of "mots transparents" or cognates. Many words in English come from French- more than 40%. For instance: fiancé, café, encore, solution...These are words you already know and can probably use fairly readily. Recognizing cognates is another good way to build confidence.
