Personally i think this advice is irresponsible. If you are teaching in a foreign country and you are serious about getting a job you do as your employer asks if that is what is required. Just because someone, several years ago refused to abide by that countries requirements does not make it right. If everyone did this there would never be any progress. I always ask myself this question " would i do this in my country." if you are serious about having a good relationship wih your manager personally my advice to you is try to make things as easy for both of you as possible. If something is completely unacceptable such as withholding wages then by all means fight your corner.
