Hey, cl, thanks for posting this. It's especially interesting to me because I remember finding, back around 2005 or so, a little known clause in the regulations for the hiring of foreign teachers that enabled schools to hire foreigners based more on the need of the school rather than the qualifications of the applicant. Of course this window of opportunity was exploited to the max and that explains why so many colleges, etc. fell into the habit of hiring any ol' Joe that could stand in front of a class.

I'm not making a judgement here, by the way. It has been said that no one is really a teacher until they start teaching - trained or not. And, as it turned out, many FTs in China who had absolutely no "qualifications" found their passion and became excellent EFL teachers. Many, however, did not, and it can even be said that they probably did more harm than good.

I suppose it is the latter that the new laws are aimed at. Along with that, though, I would hope that it is ultimately the students who will benefit the most, but I don't really see that happening. What I do see is the possibility of there being fewer instances of PSBs choosing to interpret the laws however they see fit. As I think someone else here mentioned a while back, it's somewhat helpful for FTs to know exactly wtf is going on rather than having to wait to see how the head honcho is feeling that particular day.

At any rate, the time has come where China is no longer a haven for misfits who stumbled into a teaching opportunity. Well, at least in Beijing anyway - or so it appears. But things are definitely tightening up all over, and the EFL waters of China - often difficult to navigate, seem to be getting even more choppy.
