A good post, but it is not always so cut and dried, esp not for single male FT's.

I got down to Hk and was told I'd be able to get a 60 day tourist visa (it seems gone are the days of the 90 day and 6 month visas), when I went back to collect the passport, was only issued 14 days tourist visa on the account that my passport already had some tourist visas and work visas. I was advised to get a new passport, but still with no guarantee of getting a better visa. Many ft's sent to HK to renew were simply told go home.

Come the end of the next school year, they might well insist on a yearly visa run to your home country to renew work visa, although I do hear Shanghai has 2 year visas, whether FT's are eligible for those, I am not sure.
