I could apply for a criminal check record at my Embassy, pay a fee and get it 4-6 weeks later from my country of origin in Europe via my Embassy. All other nationalities - check with your Embassy for a similar procedure as it may ease up the bureaucratic process in China.

Not true for the UK sadly turnoi, I checked a long time ago, you can't even get a scanned copy sent. It seems you have to do it in person, as they require payment and the passport, and would you post your passport from china there and back? It says you can do that, but I am skeptical, it is also illegal to be without your passport in China, how could you stay at a hotel and so on? The only way in the UK seems to be to go back and do it in person.
