An update is necessary. If you have a Chinese relative with a Hohhot hukou, you can get a 6 month RP without having to take a medical. This also applies to renewals. If you opt for a 1 year RP, you'll have to take a medical. If you opt for a 2 year RP, you may be refused, and you can't appeal. The cost of a 6 month RP is half the cost of a 1 year RP.
