Sorry, sooo sorry, I am a dithering semi-senile pensioner. I shall take your precious advice and fly back to Blighty tomorrow to get my automatic 5 year RP. I had always hoped the Chinese Immigration Authorities would play fair one day.

I didn't think for one moment that your post is rubbish. I was merely suggesting that the Chinese like you to take the Q1 visa route to your residence permit. And suggesting that direction allows you to claim a longer RP. I am open to being persuaded otherwise. By the way you will note on that Chinese Embassy Link I sent you that foreigners can invite relatives over on a Q1 visa, leading on to that 5 year RP; and they have no family history in China. They do have Chinese ID cards though. Having one foot in the door, like yourself already in China can mean a disadvantage for you. BA is offering cheap flights at the moment.
