I didn't think for one moment that your post is rubbish. I was merely suggesting that the Chinese like you to take the Q1 visa route to your residence permit. And suggesting that direction allows you to claim a longer RP. I am open to being persuaded otherwise. By the way you will note on that Chinese Embassy Link I sent you that foreigners can invite relatives over on a Q1 visa, leading on to that 5 year RP; and they have no family history in China. They do have Chinese ID cards though. Having one foot in the door, like yourself already in China can mean a disadvantage for you. BA is offering cheap flights at the moment.
No doubt there is truth in what you say, but when it comes to the lengths of RPs and visas there is nothing guaranteed except for minimum durations of stay. Refusal without a given reason is a possibility, though a remote one, and there is no right of appeal. I have stated the worst case scenario.

As the cost of a 180 day RP for a UK passport holder in China with a Chinese relative is just 400 RMB, it's very affordable for most British passport holders in China. I believe that for Americans it's 800 RMB for such an RP!

I'm sorry I was exaggerating about the ease and cheapness of returning to the UK to get a Q1 visa. And if you have been away from the rotten place for a while, it might well be a distressing and sad experience. If one had to do it, it would be best if money wasn't a problem and one could apply for the Q1 visa from a nearby Heathrow hotel and not leave it until you're back safely on a flight to China. The Q1 visa would cost you about £200 to have it returned to your Heathrow Hotel. Then there's extra for Special Delivery and I expect the hotel would Have a £5 photo booth.
