Lessons & Classroom Games for Teachers
Encouraging students to use adjectives other than "good" and "big" can be challenging. The best way to get students acquainted with using different adjectives is to turn the learning into a game. There are endless ways to make learning adjectives more fun, you just have to get creative.
Magic Bags
Magic bags are an effective way to get students to see the importance of using adjectives in order to create mental pictures. For this activity you will need enough brown lunch bags for each student in your class as well as various objects for students to describe, such as oranges or rocks.
Place an item in each bag before passing them out to the students. Instruct students to peek inside their bags, not showing anyone else. Ask students to list adjectives describing the object on the outside of the bags. Other students then must read the adjectives and figure out what's in the bag. Continue until all bags have been presented.
Goofy Collage
Goofy collage is a fun way to get students to put pictures to the adjectives that they are using. For this activity, you will need a large piece of paper for each student in your class, as well as a selection of magazines and colored pencils or markers. Instruct the students to divide their papers in half.
Fill a basket or box with small strips of paper. Each strip of paper should have a word on it. Instruct students to take two strips of paper each and glue them onto their papers, one word at the top and one at the bottom. Then ask the students to search through the magazine for pictures that represent their words, or adjectives that describe the words. They can also draw pictures or write words. When finished, these collages can be presented to the class.
