Lessons & Classroom Games for Teachers

English Alphabet Games
By:Bridget Galbreath

Difficulty: Easy
If you are an educator, teaching the alphabet in a fun and engaging way can ensure greater comprehension. One way to do this is throughgames. Children are more likely to retain knowledgethey have gained when they are having fun. Games can be interactive, involving the whole class in thelearning process, or designed for individual use so students can hone skills on their own.

Memory
Reinforce letter recognition by playing the game Memory. Design two sets of alphabet cards. Placethemface down on a table. Students flip over two cards at a time, trying to make a match. If they do notmake a match, they flip the cards back over. The goal is to remember where each card has beenplaced so players will be able to make matches as the game progresses.

Snowball Fight
Snowball Fight is an engaging and interactive way to teach letter and sound recognition. Print the 26letters of the alphabet several times on individual pieces of paper. Spread the papers face up on thefloor. Students stand to the side of the room. Call on one student at a time. Announce a sound and aword that begins with that sound--for example, "Ka- Cat." The student finds the letter that correspondswith the sound, collects it, crumples it up and places it in a plastic bag that he has been given. After allof the letters have been collected, have a snowball fight with the crumpled pieces of paper.

Sound-Letter Match
To play Sound-Letter Match, place alphabet cards on the floor. Fill plastic tubs with objects whosenames start with specific letters of the alphabet. Say a letter of the alphabet, then call on a student tomatch an object from the tub that begins with the letter you announced. The students place their objecton the letter. All students are winners because they have fun learning the letters and sounds of thealphabet.

Bean Bag Toss
Abean bag tosscan be an amusing way to reinforce letter recognition. The Little Giraffes TeachingIdeas website suggests writing the letters of the alphabet on a shower curtain. One at a time, havestudents toss a bean bag on to a letter that you say aloud. Incorporate letter-sound recognition intothis game by displaying pictures on the shower curtain. Have students toss the bean bag onto thepicture that begins with a letter that you call out.
