How Does Leadership & Motivation Relate?

Motivation is a primary function of a leader in an organization. In some instances, leaders motivate through direct interaction with subordinates. Other times, top-level leaders establish a motivating environment with a system of discipline, rewards and feedback.

Basics of Motivation
Various motivational theories have evolved over time in an attempt to explain how people are motivated. Different people are motivated with different incentives and tools, so good leaders must know their employees and their interests.

Communication
Communication plays an important role in a leader's ability to motivate. A leader who shows interest in employees by asking questions and listening increases his credibility to motivate. Leaders use informal feedback and evaluations to encourage good work and to correct ineffective performance.

Structure
Elements of organizational structure can help or hinder motivation in a company. Leaders that offer challenges, interesting responsibilities, a culture of inclusion and teamwork, respect, employee empowerment, appropriate compensation and benefits, and opportunities for growth are more likely to have motivated employees.
