Motivation Tips

Fitness Motivational Tips
By:Marisa Serafini

Getting in shape is tough, and staying motivated can be even tougher. Everyone is different, and what may motivate one person may not motivate another. Although it is ultimately up to you to decide what keeps you going, there are some commonly used techniques for staying motivated.

Work Out With a Friend
If you really want to stay motivated, get in the habit of working out with someone else. If you are both committed, the other person will serve as a strong motivating force, a kind of peer pressure. In addition, good workout conversation can be great for preventing boredom. Alternatively, you could take up a fitness class or join a sports team. The fun group environment can make you forget that you are exercising and many people find that they even make a few friends in the process.

Set Short-term Goals
Fitness takes time and if you are waiting to reach your long-term goals, you could be waiting a while. You may have better luck, and a better attitude, if you set several challenging, but possible and realistic, short-term goals. These will keep you motivated and on track while you work your way to your new, healthy body. These little successes can really boost your enthusiasm about getting in shape and will be sure to give you a better chance of reaching your long-term goal.

Reward Yourself
A great way to stay positive and on track is to pat yourself on the back every once in a while. When you reach one of your fitness goals, give yourself a reward. If you've had your eye on a new outfit, pair of shoes, or if you have been dying to go to the movies, turn that into a fitness motivator. Tell yourself that you will go and buy that outfit or enjoy your favorite snack (in moderation) once you reach a specific goal, and then actually do it! Acknowledging when you have accomplished something you can be proud of can help keep you on track to your fitness goals longer and keep a positive attitude in the process.
