Why is it so important for us to feel in control of our own destinies? Because everything that ever happens to us always starts out inside our heads. All our dreams, ideas, fear, worries are made real or prevented from becoming a reality through our own conscious or unconscious psychic energy.

Motivational speakers from around the world have discussed the power of our thoughts and words. Many motivational type books advise us to clean up our thought processes. If we are always thinking and talking negatively, saying how nothing good ever happens to us, then somehow this is the reality that we create for ourselves. Our brains take in these constant negative messages, and this is transpired into reality, whether good or bad.

On the other hand, if we identify what goals we want to achieve, and make a real effort to project these thoughts in a positive way, then we are making big strides in the correct direction of making these goals attainable.

A good exercise to try is to stand in front of a mirror, and say to yourself that you are in control of your life, no-one else. Say this over and over again, as many times as it takes until you start to believe it. This helps because if you think that someone holds power over you, then you are not in control of your own destiny. I am sure that you would rather feel calm and in control of your own life, rather than helpless and out of control.

So, taking control is empowering. Bear in mind though that you can only control your own life. Never try to take control of other people's lives, as this will open up a whole new set of problems.
