4 Sure-Fire Ways to Embrace Change
By:Julie Henderson

Change is not welcomed for most people, and many people find change difficult, while others fear it; yet, there are ways you can learn to embrace change. Whether we like it or not, change is inevitable. If we learn to adapt to changes, we are better equipped to handle them when they happen. Learning the skills to adapt to change at any age can be helpful; more importantly if you are parent, you can teach children at an early age how to embrace change, by modeling that behavior. Here are some strategies to help manage and embrace change.

1. Expect change. Change is predictable. Just like the seasons, we can predict change. Changes occur when we get married, when we have children, when children grow up and leave home, when we get a job, when we lose a job, when we start a business, when our business fails, when we grow old, or when a loved one dies. The list is endless. Change can happen slowly or quickly. We have a choice to react or respond to change.

2. Prepare for change. Anticipate change. There is an old adage, "When you are green you are growing, when you are ripe, you rot." Eckart Tolle says, "Either you evolve or die." We know our children will grow up and leave home. Plan for that change by carving out your own interests to help fill the void. When you know your business will change, prepare for those changes.

3. Accept change. Don't resist change. When change occurs, it's much healthier to accept rather than resist it. No one likes to lose their job, but when you realize you are not immune to such losses, you are more likely to accept it. It's not to say you are happy about it, but it is highly unlikely that you can reverse such a decision. So, you are better off accepting it.

4. Find the positive in change. You can always find something good in change, if you look for it. This may not be easy at first and it may even take awhile. For instance, a failed business may have left you discouraged or perhaps feeling defeated. Since then, you have gone on and built a new business and it is successful. You may be able to look back and realize you wouldn't have had the success, without that failure.

Change can be forced on us for a variety of reasons, and it is up to us whether we accept or if we resist change. Rather than be caught "off guard" when life happens, learn to expect, prepare, accept, and find the positive in change. When you do all this, you will have learned how to embrace change.
