Projecting Confidence
By:Debra Kasowski

Confidence seals the deal so to speak when securing a first impression or even a sale. You have probably heard the old adage "People do business with people they know, like, and trust." They like to know the person they are dealing with is competent, genuine, and honest. Think about the people in your own circle of influence and recent acquaintances. How do the new people become a part of your circle of influence?

Relationships are the key to your success. You attract what you project out into the world. Projecting confidence develops over time. Try some of these techniques at your next presentation or networking event to help you develop or portray confidence.

Eye Contact. Make eye contact with 2-3 individuals when you walk into a room. Maintain focus and eye contact when speaking to another. Being fully present makes the other person feel their conversation matters to you.

Facial Expression. Your facial expression can say more than words often do. If you have a scowl on your face, a person may not approach you as they may think they will be attacked. Instead, project a relaxed calm and gentle smile. What a difference it makes as it is much more inviting. Take a look at some photos you are in. What does your facial expression say?

Posture. The way you carry yourself tells others how you feel about yourself. Head up, shoulders back and walk tall. When you believe in yourself, others will believe in you as well.

Clothing. Clothing does not need to be expensive in order to project confidence. Look professional. Ensure your clothing is clean and neither too big nor too small. Choose outfits and colors you feel good in. When you feel good, you will magnetically attract others to your persona when you engage in conversation.

Handshake. Your handshake is a tell tale sign of your level of confidence. A weak handshake can mean that you lack knowledge or are not a trusted source. Whereas, the "too strong" handshake maybe seen as overconfident or "someone out for the kill."

Smile. Your smile is like a window to your soul. Try smiling with your eyes. When you smile with your eyes, people will see the sparkle of your personality. The true you shines out!

Communication. Discuss subject matter that you know about and admit when you need to seek more information about a certain topic you lack knowledge on. Speak impeccably. How you speak about others says a lot about you.

When you speak at a moderate pace, make eye contact and smile. You will quickly engage others. The art of engagement occurs when you ask others about themselves. You actually "light them up". Better yet, uncover their passions and share yours. The conversation can be about pets, children, favourite hobbies, or interest. Before you know it, you will be engaged in a lively conversation feeling like you have known each other for years.

Be aware of your non-verbal communication. Crossing your arms may appear defensive versus comforting. Rolling your eyes can demonstrate disrespect. Position yourself square with the person you are speaking with.

Be Yourself. Stay true to who you are and what you stand for. Align with others who have similar values. People want to do business with people who are honest and live with integrity.

With daily practice, you can project confidence whenever you walk into a room in no time. Confidence lies within each one of us.
