3 Secrets to Confident Success: A Look Inside the Mentality of MMA Fighters
By:Marc Hlavac

1. Proper Preparation Prevents Poor Performance:

This may seem obvious to many, yet surprisingly it is still a common belief that in order to be successful at any task, you have to be the most talented. The fact of the matter in the cage is that hard work consistently beats talent that doesn't work hard. Incredibly talented UFC fighters such as Brandon Vera, BJ Penn, and Frank Mir have all learned the hard way that talent alone does not guarantee victory.

It is said that fights are not won in the cage, but in the hours of training in the gym. Fighters also know that if they do not prepare properly for a fight, they may end up unconscious or injured in the cage.

While most of us won't suffer such severe repercussions, we all want to perform at our best when it counts.

Take this simple yet effective belief into daily life and you will notice substantial improvements in performance and confidence as well as an overall decrease in anxiety, worry, and stress.

2. Visualize the desired outcome as if it ALREADY happened

This mindset is perhaps the most important a successful fighter can have. Any sort of doubt, worry, or lack of self belief can get you hurt BADLY inside the cage. You must be 100% confidant that you can beat your opponent and imagine the great feelings and rewards of victory as if you already possess them.

This way you will act in perfect harmony when it comes time to fight. You will still possess a healthy caution as you are well aware of the dangers, but you are also motivated to push the fight and be aggressive because you are also well aware of the rewards for victory. This is the most effective way to fight.

When applied to everyday goals and projects this technique is extremely rewarding. First of all, it makes every action you take have a purpose. Second, the anticipation is a wonderful and thrilling feeling. This is the reason many fighters enjoy what they do. The anticipation and thrill of victory in the cage is second to none. There's nothing quite like facing your fears and dominating an opponent in the cage.

3. Focus on action NOT outcome

Apart from visualizing what it is you want to achieve as if it's already happened, you must never focus on controlling an outcome of a fight. It is impossible to predict what will happen. In other words, know exactly what you want (the visualization) and then focus exclusively on what actions you can take to bring about this outcome.

If you focus specifically on the outcome when fighting, you will feel anxiety and uncertainty which will cripple you in the cage because there is no way of guaranteeing an outcome. Otherwise, we'd all be UFC World Champions! Instead you must focus directly on what you have control of: your actions.

Execute the gameplan and what you have been practicing consistently in training. Successful fighters often mention that there is no time to think in the cage, only time to act. If you have properly prepared and layed out a solid gameplan, all you have to do is execute. This philosophy really helps manage worry and anxiety. You can literally just go out there and do your best.

In every day life the same philosophy can do wonders in terms of stress management and dealing with worry and fear. If you really think about it, no negative outcome in the future is actually happening right now. There is no way for it to harm you. The only thing you really have control over is your actions this very moment.

Take these three secrets to heart and you will have success in and out of the cage.
