How to Stop Being a Perfectionist, and Start Enjoying Life
By:Gail Manishor

Are you one of those people who try to do everything perfect all of the time? When it isn't perfect do you blame yourself and say I should have done it differently?

Many of us have this mind-set of looking ahead and planning it all out in our minds. It might be a holiday dinner, a party you're giving or going to, a presentation you're going to do at work. Whatever it is, you have a picture in your mind of the way it should be. We do our utmost to make it happen as we planned. But there are other people in the world who don't have the same design for that time in their mind. You may think you're on the same page. Then the big surprise hits you that you may not even be on the same planet never mind the same page.

Here's an idea of how I've planned ahead and think everyone else sees it my way too. I keep a daily journal. I recently bought a new one with the poetry of Rumi (a 13th century Sufi mystic) on every few pages. An incident happened this morning which brought me down to earth with a bang. I finally got the message of how to stop being Little Miss Perfect, get free and be myself. I'm breaking loose and opening up. If I don't do it now, maybe I never will.

I'm going to bust loose from the Little Miss Perfect persona. Think how freeing that could be. There would be fewer heart attacks and a lot less high blood pressure.

I've always been a Traditionalist. Now I'm anInnovator. I turned the page of my journal and read this quote from Rumi, "Why do you stay in prison when the door is so wide open?"

After reading the preceding quote I decided I'm stepping out of the prison of perfectionism and into freedom. There are no accidents. What could be more appropriate?

My final breakthrough came when I received an e-mail from the Practitioner Core of our Spiritual Center about our annual Christmas Candlelight Service. The tradition has been that the Practitioners / Spiritual Counselors wear all white and teal prayer stoles as we proceed down the center aisle with lighted candles. I always thought it was beautiful and sacred. Much to my chagrin many Practitioners have recently been wearing white tops with black skirts or pants. They say it's more slimming. It also makes them look like waiters.

The e-mail said Practitioners can wear red, green or white and Santa Clause hats! What! I thought. "There goes sacred," I told my husband, Bill. He said he thought it showed Practitioners can be "good sports." Well! Never let it be said I'm not a good sport. I thought, "I'll be the elf, I'll be Rudolph. Well, I don't need to go that far!

I thought we used to look like Angels walking up the center aisle all in white with our teal stoles and glowing candles. So much for angels!

I wonder if my friend DeLynn has a Santa hat? I'm busting loose from my self-built prison. I'm freeing up. It's never too late to change.

Maybe now is the time for you to change and become more flexible. I guarantee it will take the stress away that you may have anchored yourself with. You don't have to do everything perfect every time.
