Motivation Tips

3 Natural Ways to Overcome Depression
By:Tanika Forestal

Lack of motivation, mood swings, irritability, if this all seems familiar to you, you are experiencing symptoms of depression. The majority of Americans will suffer from depression at some point in time. Many will not seek help due to the stigma that is still present in society, but for those that want to get out from under the dark cloud of depression, there is help.

I encounter many people each day that are suffering from depression. Depression has the ability to turn your entire world upside down. Often times the person suffering from depression does not realize that they are depressed. Friends and family are usually the first to recognize that a loved one is not them self, and by then everyone has been seriously impacted by the aftermath. There are several signs and symptoms of depression and some are very conflicting. Symptoms include:

· Fatigue
· Lack of motivation
· Increased/decreased appetite
· Increased/decreased sleep
· Suicidal ideation
· Feelings of hopelessness/helplessness
· Loss of sexual desire
· Decreased enjoyment in hobbies
· Isolation
· Withdraw
· Feelings of worthlessness

These symptoms symbolize more than feeling down in the dumps, but depression can be very serious if ignored. Most people are aware that treatment and medications are available to those that need help, but many are not aware of steps they can take at home to help decrease symptoms while seeking help. You may be surprised at what you can do to jump start recovery while seeking counseling and possibly medications.

Exercise

Physical activity stimulates the body to produce endorphins that promotes our ability to feel good. A consistent workout plan of three 30 minute workouts per week can help alleviate some of the irritability and mood swings experienced. Now obviously exercise is not going to take away all of your circumstances but it will aid in helping your body produce much needed chemicals, increase self-esteem, and give you physical strength that can promote bone and joint health as well as help your body fight disease and sickness.

Sunlight

Okay, I know what you're thinking. Sunlight is the reason we slather ourselves in sun block and make visits to the dermatologist, but sunlight has positive effects on our moods. The sun's rays produce vitamin D. This is essential for our bodies and helps with mood stabilization. Trust me, people in Hawaii and Florida tend to have less bouts of depression than people in Alaska. Some studies have shown a link between depression and vitamin D deficiency. Other studies have shown that a sufficient amount of vitamin D may help alleviate depressed mood. So the next time you are feeling down, try catching a few rays.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Most people are aware of the health benefits of omega-3 fatty acid, but did you know that adding this healthy fat to your diet can help fight depression? Omeg-3 fatty acids are found in fish, natural plants, flaxseed, and some nuts. They help fight belly fat but they also help your emotional well being also. Not a fan of seafood? Well you can benefit from this wonderful resource by taking it in capsule form.

If you have experienced depression you are aware that it is much more than just feeling down in the dumps. Speaking with a trained professional can be very helpful. Some people may have to consider medications as well, but there are natural remedies that assist in providing relief. Exercise, sunlight, and a healthy diet packed with omega-3 fatty acids can play a core role in helping you win the battle against depression.
