Don't Let Life Pass You By
By:Marsha Maung

Life in the fast lane can really take a toll on you and if you're not careful, you'd be inviting many different types of uninvited guests into your lives; namely, stress, anxiety, depression, high blood pressure, and many other types of illnesses. Working hard is a good thing and many experts have said that a little bit of stress in our lives is a good thing. But do you know your threshold? Do you know when to stop or when to slow down?

I've never been one to be lazy and used to consider doing nothing being lazy. The fast lane excited me and honking became a favorite past time....sneering at the slow and easy-going people I was leaving behind. But it was only after crashing out during an extremely fast paced period of my life that I realized that those people who I sneered at at the start were passing me and they were smiling. It was bewildering to me that they were happy to be slow!

But you go through life learning different things and I learned that doing nothing or doing things slowly is far more worth it than doing too many things at once. Doing nothing, therefore, I conclude is something that we should ALL do once in a while. Doing something for yourself and feeding off of the small, little things in life that makes you happy is the best thing that you can do for yourself; what you will gain is happiness, joy, enjoyment of what life has handed you.

Make time for yourself and the things that you like to do, like reading, playing a musical instrument, exercising or, like me, do nothing. Sit down on your favorite spot (everyone should have at least one spot in their home whereby they feel most at ease) and just close your eyes and think of either nothing or everything good.

Life hands you a lot of things along the way and if you focus on chasing what you want to have too much, you'll lose out on the good things that life is trying to hand you. When you feel yourself pushing yourself too hard - stop or slow down. For workaholics like me, this can take immense effort! But it will get easier once you've tackled it. When you feel the urge to forge ahead, wrestle yourself down and tie your arms and legs down mentally and force yourself to think of nothing but yourself and the people you treasure in your life.

Don't take yourself too seriously, take it from me. Take your job, your responsibilities seriously but never yourself. There is always a time to be serious and a time to goof off. Remember to goof off once in a while and laugh at what an idiot you can be. So, starting from today, hopefully, you will embrace the concept of being lazy once in a while and don't let life pass you by just like that.
