Motivational Stories
By:Ben Chhay

I would like to share a motivational story from Jamie Valvano Howard who talks about never giving up!!

At the age of 17, Jim Valvano(father) took out a simple white card and wrote down all of his goals that he wanted in life. He would play basketball in high school and college, become an assistant basketball coach, then a head coach and finally winning a National Championship.

At the age of 36 Jim had completely crossed out all his goals he set out to achieve on white card. Jim once said, "There are 86,400 seconds in a day. It's up to you to decide what to do with them." Jim has authored books, given many motivational speeches all over the country, hosted weekly television broadcast and has even appeared on The Tonight Show and The Cosby Show.

"I want to do other things, learn about other professions. I refuse to limit myself to whatever boundaries you may think surround a coach's position. Very simply, I enjoy diversity", says Jim in a press conference. Each and every new challenge only proving that his talents were endless. Jim had the "I can do that" attitude and live each moment of his life to the fullest.

Jim Valvano worked hard to motivate, stimulate, entertain and inspire anyone that entered his life. The world was similar to his basketball team and he wanted everyone to be winners. In doing this he hoped that people would learn from the way he lived his life.

Metastatic Adenocarcinoma would prove the toughest hurdle that this coach had ever faced. The doctor had informed him that he only had a year to live. In Jim's last interviews he announced that he wanted to help every cancer patient.

He spent the final ten months of his life giving the world personal insights into the life of a cancer patient in the hope that he could bring some attention to the disease that affects millions. He wasn't afraid to let other people see his weakening body or even the tears that shed when he spoke of his certain death. He knew that his body would lose the battle against cancer, but his vibrant spirit was the gift that he would leave behind.

Jim Valvano is an example of one individual that can influence this world with the never give up attitude. So, research an idea and plan and expect success & just do it! Live life to the fullest and enjoy every second!!
