Motivation Tips

A Short Lesson in Encouragement
By:Scott McQuarrie

One of the great advertising slogans of all time is also a powerful reminder that action speaks louder than words. And it is a universal truth, too, effective in every area of life.

"Just do it."
Let's give credit where it's due. Thank you, Nike. You saved millions of people, the ones who "get it," the cost of a Tony Robbins seminar or copy of "Your Best Life Now." The big secret about self-help secrets is that there aren't any secrets. It is, as it always has been and always will be, the decision to take direct action that gets things done.

Presidential opinion
Many have put it into words, this recognition that perseverance, "just doing it," is the key to success in all endeavors. None have explained quite so well as President Calvin Coolidge the way that successful people take action:

"Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan 'press on' has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race."

Press on. Persist, be determined, work at it. Take action. Just do it, whatever it is, whomever it involves, and put your all into it. Stay positive but observe things carefully too, in case some change of plan is needed along the way. But the details are yours to work out.

Onward and upward
You need to be working out those details all the time, every day, and you will always have the opportunity to do just a bit more, because the clock never stops turning. With each sweep of the hand you have another opportunity to be about your business, doing those things that will get you where you want to go and take care of you after you arrive. It isn't easy, but it is simple.

How's that?
Think of it this way. Climbing Mt. Everest is not easy to do, but it is simple to explain. "Start at the bottom and go up." Look at your own challenges the same way, broken down into their basic components. Whatever it is you are committed to doing, simply continue to press forward, moving onward and upward, never standing still.

Life moves so fast that, if we do stand still, it rushes right past. And it seems to be accelerating all the time, in every area of our lives, from work to home and everywhere in between. And there's only one way to keep up (or, better yet, get ahead). It's been phrased a lot of ways, from Nike's world-renowned three words to Oprah's own three-word cheer, "You go, girl" (Men, just substitute "guy" in there for yourselves.)

You get the idea. Just to finish drilling it in, let's end with a two-word and a one-word slogan to make it as easy as possible.

Take action!
