Re: Driving Away Stress
In Response To: Driving Away Stress (Rene Graeber)

Hello,
I so enjoyed your suggestions for taking the stress out of driving. There are many that I practice already. I also do little stretches to fight fatigue and breathing techniques to stay clear and relaxed.

Shoulder help: My shoulders often get sore and I've learned that it's easy to sit up a little taller in the seat, then gently pull one shoulder towards the center of the steering wheel, with resistance, then push it back into the seat. If you do that 3 or 4 times on each side your upper back and shoulders feel much better.

Breathe, Mom: My son often rides with me and when I get stressed he sometimes says, 'Breathe, Mom'. It's our little joke because that's what I teach as the first technique in my Yoga classes. It's the conscious breathing that makes a difference and that means to:

  • breathe in though your nose and let the air drop deeply into your belly with awareness. There's no need to hold the breath, but
  • exhale slowly through your nose again and completely.
  • Repeat that and as Harvard's Mind-Body Institute found in a recent study, you'll lower your blood pressure, increase your energy and mental clarity. Simple and easy to do anywhere.

Busy days and long to-do lists, running errands and just commuting home can be easier with little stretch breaks and breath work.

    Namaste,
Elaine, RYT and award-winning author of Drivetime Yoga.
