Overcoming the Fear of Embarrassment
By:Bruno Baceli

All of us are social creatures, but some are outgoing while others are shier. Universal to all of us, however, is the fear of being embarrassed in front of others.

Overcoming the Fear of Embarrassment

We have all had that experience that makes us cringe. We have said or done something that embarrassed us in front of others. While some say your cheeks turn pink, we probably felt like they were going to turn into lava.

Embarrassment can be a very difficult hurdle to overcome. Given the strength of the emotion, one has to think it is rather amazing we have been able to accomplish anything. I mean, who was the first person that figured out you could drink the milk from a cow? Surely, that had to be a massively embarrassing moment until it was shown it could be done.

Our biggest fear when it comes to embarrassment is being exposed. It is all about our insecurities. Simply put, we fear that people will realize we are not the person we hold ourselves out to be. Perhaps we aren’t as smart as we would like people to think. Perhaps we are not as sophisticated. Whatever the situation, it can really hinder one of the key aspects of our lives.

Much of the joy of life comes from experiencing new things. Indeed, it is the rare person who was born knowing what their passion is. Instead, we learn our likes, dislikes and even our meaning of life by trying things. Often our efforts fail, but so what? Does it really matter if you make an ass out of yourself a couple of times? No. If you disagree, look no further than love. The lucky few have found that special person on the first go. Most of us don’t and make ungodly mistakes – embarrassing mistakes! Do we quit? No. The drive for love is too embedded in our make up to do so.

Life is short. I don’t say this in a negative way. I simply mean that we are here for a nominal amount of time. Can you really afford not try things that might end up being embarrassing? No. If you are faced with something and the warning lights go up, disregard them. You will be richer for it. If you do end up being embarrassed, laugh at yourself and note that at least you tried it.

One of the issues with overcoming the fear of embarrassment is the view of our peers. Simply put, there is a subjection of people that mock the efforts of others. Don’t let these people control you. They have empty lives. They do nothing, try nothing and ultimately are unhappy. If anything, you should feel sorry for them.
