Motivation Tips

Reach Out
By:Donna Higton

It is said that the true mark of a twenty-first century person is whether their address book is in their e-mail and all phone numbers are stored in their mobile. I can certainly hold my hand up and say if you are not on e-mail and I can’t text you, you probably won’t hear from me anytime soon.

This is a shame because the quality communication with friends we all enjoy becomes diluted into a few lines of ‘good thanx u? ;-)’ type conversations. Having said all that, there are times when texting/e-mailing is a wonderful medium because you can just get in touch very quickly with someone and tell them you love them.

This was brought home to me recently when a friend of mine text me to thank me for a birthday present I gave her about 6 years ago! The gist of the text was using this item reminded her what great friends we were and she wanted me to know that she was thinking that.

It brightened up my day. Everytime I thought of the text I smiled, and it brought up some wonderful memories of ten years of friendship with this fabulous woman. It also made me think about reaching out to my friends. There are a few people I do not see or speak to as often as I’d like – busy lives and so on. But they are in my thoughts often.

Every time I hear David Gray’s ‘Babylon’, I think of George. Whenever I hear Pulp, I think of Katie. Standing on the roof of my parent’s house reminds me of Claire (don’t ask!). Everyday, random things bring my friends to mind but I rarely let them know. After feeling the effect one little text had on me, I decided to ‘reach out’ to some of my other friends.

Remember the ad campaign Royal Mail did? Saw this and thought of you? Well, it went along those lines. And do you know what? I got more out of it than they did. I delved the depths of my memory and found my favourite friendship moments and then told the friend concerned how much it meant to me.

Wonderful. This helped me to realise that not only do I have some fantastic memories, I have the best friends anyone could ask for. Sometimes we all take our friendships for granted, and sometimes we let them go because of lack of time, energy or inclination. But our friends are always there – through thick and thin, drunkenness and serious moments, love and hate.

Why not reach out right now and tell them how much you appreciate that?
