Motivation Tips

Handling Disappointment
By:James Delrojo

Everyone experiences disappointment from time to time in their life. You don't always get your goal by the desired date and things don't always work exactly as planned. How you handle that disappointment determines whether you move ahead and eventually succeed of whether you fade into oblivion.

Is Your Glass Half Empty or Half Full

Life is a mixture of joy and sadness but where do you put your focus. If you see your glass as half empty then you focus on the sadness and disappointment in life and thereby activate the Law of Focus causing sadness and disappointment will expand in your life. An example of the famous self fulfilling prophesy.

If you see your glass as half full then you will quickly get over disappointment and start focusing on what is good in your life. This will also activate the Law of Focus but this time the law will be attracting more good and more joy and more success into your life.

Keep Your Goal But Change the Date

If disappointment comes to you in the form of a goal not achieved or a goal that is lagging way behind on its schedule then it can be tempting to give up. It can seem attractive to tell yourself that you weren't meant to get that particular goal or comfort yourself with some other self pitying, defeatist rhetoric, but that will not serve you well.

The first rule of goal achievement is to never give up on your goal. If you are not going to achieve your goal by the hoped for date then change the date! It's not the end of the world to take a little longer to get what you want. Keep your goal, change the date and improve your strategy.

Revise and Improve Your Strategies

If your goal hasn't arrived as planned then there are two possibilities. Firstly you set an unrealistic time frame or secondly that your strategy for achieving your goal has not been up to scratch.

Step outside of yourself for a moment and take a serious, discerning look at the strategy you have been applying and make some decisions on what is really working and what needs to be overhauled.

Reality is that most successful people don't get their strategies perfect on the first try. Many successful people start with strategies that are totally inappropriate and fall well short of their target. But all successful people have the courage to review and improve their strategies and move ahead. That's why they end up successful while others with less strength of character fall by the wayside.

Assess Your Goal Directed Action Habits

Take a long hard look at the goal directed action that you have been taking and ask yourself if you have really been doing the things you should be doing or whether you have just been fooling yourself by keeping busy doing things that don't really count.

There is always a strong subconscious resistance to change and one of the ways the subconscious avoids change is to keep you busy on work that will never really lead to change. If that has been a factor in leading to your disappointment then start being more self disciplined and make sure that your goal directed actions are actions that really are taking you closer to fully achieving your goal.

Part of this process should be to review your time management strategies and make sure that you have been distinguishing between the important and the urgent.

Put Disappointment Behind You and Focus on Today's Action

Use your disappointment as a motivating force to inspire you to lift your game and then put the feelings of disappointment behind you and focus on what you need to focus on to move onward and upward.

Keep your focus on the part of your glass that is half full and work to fill the rest. Success goes to those with the courage to stare defeat in the face and then move on to triumph. That can be you if you want it to be.
