Motivation Tips

Motivation - Only Two Sources Stop Procrastination
By:Joe Crawford

The science of motivation says there are two sources of motivation to get from point A to point B. That's right, all change, growth and innovation is powered by one of only two motivational sources. One source will motivate movement and the other source will motivate directional achievement.

Socrates taught that all motivation can be traced back to one of two originating sources. These two sources are:

Movement Away From Pain.

Movement Toward Pleasure.

This is the summary of the first: You are experiencing something in your life that causes pain. This something could be a strain in a relationship, a lawsuit, a flat tire, debt, depression, anxiety, confusion, frustration, guilt, poverty, risk, vulnerability, or a number of other emotions, circumstances, or realities. You get fed up one day and you have had enough. You become determined to change this circumstance or emotion or reality and you begin to take action. The thoughts and feelings you experienced just before you became fed up and started taking action could be labeled a "Pain Motivator"

Now we fast forward three months or so. Your actions a few months back changed your situation and you began to move away from your reality and saw some manifestation of a new reality. Now, though, some of the same situations are starting to appear again. Frustration is building and your experiencing more and more anxiety. What is this? Why? There may seem to be a cycle of sorts, that is a recurring theme in you life. Why is this?

When we choose to feed from a pain motivator we will always experience some results. Often times the results will be almost immediate. This is one attractive element to the pain motivator along with the fact that a pain motivator is easy and obvious. The trouble though is that the further you get away from the frustrating event, circumstance, or emotion the less it motivates. The very source of motivation is what you want to go away and when it does it comes back, sometimes with a different face, nonetheless though, it comes back. This is where cycles in life can come from.

This is a summary of the Second: The movement toward pleasure. The story starts the same way you have some areas of your life that you dont really care for and some of the experiences you would like to have seem to avoid you. You sit down and figure out what it is that you want. You write down some detailed goals. These might include some boundaries in relationships, some financial goals, some general feeling goals, and maybe some long term success goals.

Now you know where you wand to go. You think about your goals a few times a day and stay focused on the new life that you are designing on purpose. After some time, usually longer than the previous example of a pain motivator, you start to see some of this new life manifesting. Your new reality begins to take shape. As you see results you become more and more motivated and you actual life becomes your motivation. When you wake up in the morning you have a list of two or three things your doing today to move you in the direction you want to go and you feel the motivation that is required to take you there.

All accomplishments and change have components that can be attributed to the success and achievement of the specific change. The components are always there and motivation is always one of these important components or piece of the puzzle. Life can be a game and with any game there are rules and ways you can play that increase your chances of success.

Being, staying, and feeling motivated is a foundational element of success, change, and creation. Choose to move toward pleasure. Motivate yourself with the vision you have of the life you most want to live. The vision will always change, but the motivation will always be the vision if you choose to live in a motivated way.
