Motivation Tips

Motivation and Labels - What is in a Name?
By:Michael Twomey

So you want more motivation to get things done.

Have you ever wondered what is in a name? It is all about perspective. I will explain more about this later on in this article. So why do we give things names or labels? Well it tends to make things simpler when people are on the same page and can agree about the meaning of things.

The sky is blue because we called that color blue and we agree about this. There are variations on blue and in different countries they have different languages that translate into blue. One person may love the color blue while another person hates it.

So blue has a meaning yet the value that is attached can be very personal and can vary tremendously from person to person.

This even relates to phobias and fears and how to resolve them yet that is something for another article. It also relates to more powerful communication skills which I will also cover more in the future.

For now, this article will focus on how words and labels affect your own motivation.

Basically, our lives tend to be hectic and fast paced and so in order to make things easier we filter out a lot of information.

We label things and give names to tasks in order to make things easier and yet sometimes this creates miscommunication and misunderstanding.

You see there are deeper meanings to words and labels and they are not universal. Some words or labels can mean something totally different for you than it does for your boss, spouse, kids, parents, etc.

There is criteria of what you mean and the value yet this gets a bit more complex so for now I will just share some very powerful tips that you can use right now to help yourself get more motivated and to be more successful.

Imagine the ease with which you find yourself getting chores completed once you learn this simple trick.

Words are only a small proportion of our communication and yet they can have tremendous power both for ourselves and with for others.

So I want you to read this article with an open mind and then afterwards I want you to make a small list of chores that you have to complete. Take this small list and give each of these chores or tasks a different name or label.

Without going into connotations and denotations and biases, let us just get to what is useful.

Look at the chore or task on your list and notice how you feel about it.

For example, as of this writing it is Tax season and for many people that word is enough to get them to cringe.

However, for a Tax Accountant or to the Internal Revenue Service this is their profession. So to them the words : Tax, Taxes, Deductions, Itemizing, are simply words that are part of what they do. Some accountants like or love what they do while others may simply do this because it is a job and they are good at it.

It is the same for someone shopping for presents during the Holiday Season. For the person shopping there never seems to be enough time to get from work to the stores to do all their shopping. Now from the sales clerk point of view they usually feel overwhelmed during this busy time and cannot wait to have the store close so that they can go home. They can close the store at closing time and go back to their own family. They can take their lunch break and may step into the role of shopper and then after lunch they need to get back to work and so they have to step back into the role of sales person.

Some people like to shop while other people hate it. So shopping can also have multiple meanings depending on who you talk to.

So take a few minutes and notice how you feel about the word Taxes or getting your taxes done.

People even joke about roads, death and taxes.

Joking can also be a way to break this pattern of dread and help you get things done.

Now think of other words you can give to this task or chore. Some words will seem lifeless and dead while other words or labels will seem to lighten the mood, while the best words will even get you motivated to complete the mission.

So if you like the idea of being a spy on a secret mission or joke about taxes being mission impossible notice how you feel and which label or role gets you to finish things in the best way possible.

This is very personal so for one person creating a context of a warrior going to battle and completing the mission may help them get things done and will feel good, while to someone else this may cause even more dread than just having to "show appreciation" to the government for running things.

I think you get the idea and it also helps to say the word or label out loud because you can hear the sound of your voice and what you really feel about the word Taxes or whatever task you will find yourself completing more easily by using this powerful tip.
