Believe You Can - And You Can!
By:Erica Goodstone, Ph.D.

Do YOU think you can? Henry Ford once said, "If you think you can, if you think you can't, you're right!"

So often we give up without even trying, just assuming that we can't do whatever it is we are attempting. Many people run from relationships when the emotional conflicts begin to emerge. They may run into someone else's arms to assuage the uncomfortable feelings because they think they can't bear it. But they can't bear those feelings because they think they can't. There are many other people who endure intensely painful periods in their relationships but know that they can and will get through it. "If you think you can, if you think you can't, you're right."

This thinking does not only apply to relationships, it affects everything you do and everything new that you attempt to do. Another powerful statement in this same line is: Successful people do what unsuccessful people will not do. Successful people will not give up when the going gets tough. They will hang in there and seek solutions. If they don't have immediate answers, they will seek help. If they need training, they will take courses. If they need counseling or therapy, they will schedule an appointment.

How do you switch from thinking you can't to thinking you can? One way to overcome your sense of preconceived failure is to observe others who just do it, whatever it is you want to do. Another way is to make a study of this thing you think you can't do. For example, you may think you can't lose weight so you just don't bother to diet. Or, perhaps, you have tried a few diets, lost a few pounds, but quickly gained it all back. You can make a study of nutrition, the way different food groups affect the body and how exercise might affect your digestion and metabolism. As you learn more, you may discover a way that appears simple to you and then you will begin thinking "I can lose weight."

How do you change your thinking from I can't to I can? First step is to admit that your have been thinking, "I can't." Next step is to imagine what it would take for you to have confidence that you can. Perhaps, you can imagine yourself already having accomplished this task. If you imagine that scenario every day for an entire month, you will have retrained your mind to believe you can. Your mind does not know the difference between actual physical accomplishment and imagined accomplishment. So if you set your mind to imagine for an entire, you will literally have created new synaptic connections in your brain and you will begin to know "I can." Remember, "If you think you can, if you think you can't, you're right."
