Manila is the capital and second largest city of the Southeast Asian island nation of the Philippines. Only Quezon City, the previous capital, has more inhabitants. Manila, a city rich in history and culture, generally has a warm and pleasant climate. Because of past Spanish rule, the city is full of Roman Catholic churches, historic sites, museums and various other landmarks. There is no shortage of things to do and places to see in Manila. Take a walk along the Baywalk. This promenade overlooks the Manila Bay. Going along Roxas Boulevard, visitors walking on the Baywalk can get views of the most impressive, exquisite panoramic sunsets possible. The Baywalk is very popular with tourists and locals alike.

Spend some time at the National Museum of the Philippines. This museum was constructed in 1901 to be the premier natural history and ethnography museum in the country. Designed by American architect Daniel Burnham, this visually majestic museum is the leading spot to learn about the arts and natural sciences in Manila.

Check out San Agustin Church. This church is in the historic walled section of Manila, called Intramuros. Not only is San Agustin the oldest church in the Philippines, it is the oldest building still standing in the country as well. It has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Be sure to take a look at the ornate, exquisitely carved front door of the church.

Relax at Rizal Park, named after Philippine Revolution martyr Dr. Jose Rizal, who died in 1896. This park, located in the heart of Manila, is perhaps the most famous one in all of the Philippines. Not only is the park a great place to relax, it's also a good place to look at historical monuments. The Rizal Monument, dedicated to Jose Rizal, was made of bronze and granite and is perhaps the best known landmark in the country.

Visit the Manila Zoological and Botanical Garden. This is one of the oldest zoos in Asia, and is home to approximately 800 animals from over 100 species. If you plan on visiting the zoo, take a look at the most popular animal there, Mali, a large Asian elephant, who first came to the zoo as a calf orphan.
