How to Make a Cover Letter - Your Ultimate Step by Step Guide

How to make a cover letter? Well, writing a cover letter is a tedious task for those who do not want to exert any effort. However, the need and importance of a cover letter cannot be underestimated. That is why; creating it should be given enough attention and details.

Below are some tips and procedure on how to make a cover letter.

1. Make the header as simple as possible. Actually, most letters of applicants for a job has no header. It is usually written on a clean bond paper with Letter or A4 size.

2. Do not forget to put the date after skipping down 4 lines. The format should be: Month Day, Year. Do not put the number value for month. Instead, present the exact and complete word for the month (e.g., January)

3. Make another 4 lines then put the Contact Person, his/her position, and address. After the contact person, place the position on the next line, then the address or company name at the third line. Type in the Contact Person's name in an all capital format.

4. For the salutation, if you know the name of your contact person, put Dear Mr./Ms. (Name). Otherwise, just put Dear Sir/Madam. Do not forget the colon (:)

5. For the body of the letter:

The first paragraph should contain your intention in writing the letter. It usually starts with the sentence, "I am writing to apply..." Also include where you were came to know the vacancy.

In the second paragraph you can state your qualifications and experiences that makes you suitable for the position that you are applying for. Relate some relevant details of your experience to create a strong point.

For the final paragraph, include the details on where the company can contact you in case your application is considered.

6. Do not forget to thank them for spending time in reviewing your application.

7. Check you punctuation and make sure that there are no grammatical conflicts in your letter.

8. For the Complimentary Close, use one of the following: Sincerely yours, Respectfully yours, Truly yours. After this, skip 3 lines.

9. Type your name in an all-capital format then sign.

10. If there are other enclosures such as resume, diploma, or whatever certificate they require, just skip 2 lines and put encl. (type of document enclosed).

But when creating a cover letter, avoid using words which are jargon, vulgar, or slang; as much as possible, use formal words.
