Resume and Interview Tips

Writing a Resume for the Internet
By:Chuck Cochran

The first key is to make sure the writing is correct: spelling, grammar, syntax, usage, etc. Nothing stops a Hiring Manager faster in reviewing a job application, than finding a string of typos and spelling-errors. This indicates not only that a poor communicator has written it, but that this person is unconcerned about accuracy and proper presentation-which might indicate carelessness toward other aspects of employment. (Note: If writing skills are not your strong point, hiring a good editor is always an option. Showing your best face is worth a few dollars to improve the product.)

Next, you need to make good use of industry-appropriate language, salting the resume with words and phrases to demonstrate your awareness of the field. This is imperative in attracting the right job once the resume is being read. Meanwhile, to ensure that your application rises from the swamp of submissions, include some keywords within the text. This will add to your chances of being found for the right job: a Hiring Manager performing a Web search for specific talents may discover your resume at or near the top of the search, and contact you as a result.

Another consideration is file-format. Your resume may be passed back and forth among Hiring Managers and other decision-makers during the process of considering applicants, and unorthodox or overly complicated software may result in distorted documents. The industry standard is Microsoft Word (preferably a simpler, older format than the newest version; MS Word 97-2003 is compatible with most systems now in use).

In addition, artistic designs, complicated layouts, tables or text boxes to your resume may be skewed during the transfers among emails. Avoid these at all costs. Keep the layout simple and professional, while focusing on good writing and clear communication.

With these points in mind, you should be able to raise the quality and effectiveness of your resume well above the pool of competitors. For another boost, you might consider contacting us at http://www.myhiringauthority.com so we can help you make it even better.
