Resume and Interview Tips

CV Writing - Spelling and Grammar Are Vital for the Perfect CV
By:Andrew Robert Johnson

In the current employment market place it is vital to ensure the look of your CV and associated documents are designed to gain the maximum exposure with potential employers.

Nowadays there is much advice available on CV writing, which can often be contradictory. Should you keep your CV to a maximum length of 2 pages or stretch to several pages? Should you include your martial status, age, unusual hobbies or just list relevant qualifications? Should you use colour in the titles?

But what all employers, professional CV writers, recruitment consultants, websites and books agree on is no matter how professional your CV looks, if you make grammatical errors it will go straight to the bottom of the pile. I guarantee potential employers will notice!

There is no excuse for bad spelling or grammar, especially in this day and age with the use of spell check.

Employers will perceive candidates that have CVs with incorrect spelling or grammar to be rather sloppy, lazy individuals.

Always check the dates of employment and education as the potential employer will check when gaining references and also try to minimise any "gaps" in employment. If you do have any gaps think of reasons for these gaps and include positives - perhaps you started a family, gained more training / education, travelled etc... Good positive things to include in your CV.

Do not be afraid to put relevant work experience first on your CV (even if this means it is not in chronological order) so potential employers can immediately see why a person is suitable. However, make sure that the rest of your work history remains in chronological order; with the most recent job first.

It is not only the detail on your CV that you need to spend time checking. Cover Letters should be correct too. Where possible address the Cover Letter to an individual and avoid "To Whom It May Concern". If the job advert does not specify a name phone and ask the company or check out the company website for more information.

Graduates or school leavers with limited work experience should write a covering letter explaining why they would be good for the job.

Your CV is a working document and should be updated regularly and adapted to target specific job roles or industries.
