Resume and Interview Tips

Cover Letter - Writing a Great Cover Letter to Get the Results You Want
By:Andrew Robert Johnson

CVs/resumes need an introduction. A CV or Application Form should never be sent without a Cover Letter. Cover Letters provide you with the ideal opportunity to introduce yourself and therefore are a vital part of the job application process. Briefly outline your skills, experiences, qualifications and availability to ensure potential employers read your CV.

A Cover Letter needs to be short, to the point, polite and professional. It needs to explain where you saw the job advertised with the date and job role. Try not to repeat any of the key words or phrases used in your CV. Use new ones; this prevents the employer feeling that they have just read what is in your CV.

Try to get your personality across. You may be: dynamic, pioneering, attentive, flexible, resourceful, dedicated, accurate, etc let the employer get a good feel for you; you want them to think "wow, this person will fit in perfectly with the team".

Check everything; names, addresses, and job reference number, etc. DO NOT MAKE ANY MISTAKES.

Again, a Cover Letter needs to "look the part". Ensure you use the same style and size of font that is on your CV; this creates conformity across the documents and looks professional when sat on the employer's desk. Try to use nice paper (although in current times more and more applications are sent via email and job sites). Also ensure that you spell the employers name etc correctly if you have any questions call the employers place of work and check prior to sending anything.

A vital thing to remember with a Cover Letter is not to "ramble" on; make it short, polite and to the point. You want the employer to be warmed up and ready to concentrate fully on your CV, therefore for the majority of Cover Letters we recommend them not being any longer than 3 or 4 paragraphs.
