Cover Letters - Your Top Ten Checklist To Make Sure Your Letter Is Perfect
By:Gillian Rogerson

A cover letter is an important part of your application process. It tells the employer what position you are applying for and how you are suited to that position. Your resume alone won't tell the employer this. A cover letter is such an important part of your application that many employers won't consider you further without one.

Here is a checklist to make sure your cover letter is the best that it can be:

1. Have you addressed it to a named individual? This is vitally important as it shows the employer that you have taken the time and effort to find out who to write to.

2. Is your letter set out in a professional, business like manner? Make sure it is printed on white or cream paper and set out correctly.

3. Is it clear where the employer can reach you? Imagine if the employer has become so impressed with your letter that they have to call you immediately - and they can't find a contact number!

4. Is it an original letter or a mass produced one? Create a great impression by tailoring your letter specifically to the employer.

5. Have you highlighted your skills? Have you given examples of how you have used these?

6. Have you made it clear how you can benefit the employer? Don't tell the employer how this job would really help your career - this is all about what you can do for them, not the other way round.

7. Are your spellings correct? What about punctuation and grammar. Don't let silly mistakes let you down.

8. Is your letter too long? Have you rambled on, using unnecessary words and long paragraphs? The ideal length for a cover letter is one page.

9. Have you identified what position you are applying for? The employer may be advertising for several. Quote any reference numbers that you were asked to in the job advertisement.

10. Have you signed it? Don't spoil your letter with this avoidable mistake!

Good luck with your job hunting!
