By:Anna M D'Souza

Want to learn how to close a cover letter? Obviously all job seekers would like to close a cover letter in a way to motivate the hiring manager to give them a call for interview. Assuming two candidates having similar experiences and qualifications, one receives more calls than the other. What makes the difference? The way they close a cover letter makes the difference.

Job seekers usually ask for an interview at the end of the cover letter. You may think that it is a simple task, but in fact, it isn't. There are tactics in it.

Let's review some of the commonly used ways to close a cover letter. We will then compare and analyze them.

1. Please find enclosed my resume for your review. I look forward to hearing from you.

2. Thank you for considering my candidacy. I look forward to hearing from you.

3. I would appreciate the opportunity to meet with you to discuss my candidacy. Thank you for your time and consideration.

4. I recognize the limitations that written words can pose and would like to convey my interest to meet with you in person.

5. If you have questions about my candidacy, please do not hesitate to contact me.

6. I am confident I can exceed your expectations. I hope we can meet so that I can convey my interest in this position to you in person.

7. I would appreciate the opportunity to meet with you in person to discuss my qualifications and answer any questions you may have. I look forward to hearing from you.

8. I would appreciate the opportunity to meet with you and members of your team. I will be flying to New York next week and should be available from Tuesday to Friday. Thank you for considering my candidacy. I look forward to hearing from you.

9. Could we meet for an interview? I'm eager to find out your expectations for the person you hire and to show you how I will work hard to meet them. Please name a date and time that is right for you and I'll be there, ready to get right down to business.

Now let's measure the effectiveness of these closing statements on a cover letter. The way they are numbered is NOT only for the purpose of numbering, they are also aligned with an effectiveness scale, meaning 1 is least effective and 9 is most effective. Here is a review summary.

1-5: Very polite but too conventional. Hiring managers read these statements day after day on almost 95% of the cover letters they read. So they are not likely to generate any action.

6: Slightly better. It conveys a message of "exceeding expectations" but it's still saying that you are interested in the position and not telling why the position needs you.

7: Not bad as it promotes a two-way communication. It may work better with added eagerness and passion.

8: Works relatively well in a sense of setting an availability timeline in a polite and practical manner. If your qualifications and experiences are somehow relevant, it is probable that the hiring manager will set up a time to meet you.

9: This is the best answer to the question of "how to close a cover letter". It shows your eagerness to find out the employer's needs and how you will work hard to meet them. This attitude is generally appreciated. It is likely that the hiring manager will start to look up a date and time in his diary and give you a call.
