Resume and Interview Tips

Writing a Resume That Will Get You the Job Interview
By:Raymond James

The generic, boring, one page resume has had its day. The 21st Century employer is much more likely to show interest in a resume that is customized: they are more inclined to interview prospective employees who have indicated some prior knowledge of the company.

When you conduct some research, you are showing initiative that will impress a potential employer. This research will also allow you to judge whether or not you would be happy to work for the company and whether you would be able to fit in with other employees.

Having prior knowledge of the company will also give you an advantage in the job interview: you will have a heads up on what to say. Especially when it comes to communicating any ideas you may have that fit into company philosophy.

This research will also help to reduce stress levels as you are already ahead of the competition.

The following five tips will assist you in customising your resume.

1. Visit the website - and not just the introduction. Carefully examine the layout and design of the page as this will give vital information regarding the type of company. Make yourself familiar with the major stakeholders in the company.

2. Look further than the company site. Conduct a Google search on the company name and examine recent news articles and annual reports as well as other relevant information.

3. Investigate the company's competition. If possible, talk to people who work for the competition as this will help you to gain an insight into how the company is viewed by insiders.

4. Have an informal chat and ask friends and co-workers about what they know regarding the company.

5. Make a phone call to the company. Talk to the receptionist and get their views on the company. It is a good idea to get information regarding dress code, organization, the leadership style and the general atmosphere of the workplace.
