How to Build a Good Resume That Gets Attention
By:Trevor Johnson

Stories of employers who give each resume one quick glance before tossing it aside for the next have many people in a panic that their resume is never going to be read. This leads to the mistake of throwing in fancy colors or fonts in attempt to get attention. This only leads to immediate rejection, so a better alternative is to learn how to build a good resume without annoying gimmicks.

Instead of trying to catch attention with unusual fonts or bright colors, focus on making sure your resume is easy and fast to read. You want a basic font such as Times New Roman which will be easy to decipher. Plain black should always be used. A good print quality is also important as smeared or faded out text is difficult to read.

Next, you want to focus on selling your skills and your background instead of packing the resume with fun or interesting points about yourself. You are not trying to amuse, but rather impress.

Make sure to put your complete contact information at the top of the resume, and then start with your work history and education.

Do not go back thirty years with the work history. Stick with your most recent jobs to establish a solid work ethic or with jobs related to the position you are applying for.

You may have more than one section for your education. Besides the basic schools you attended you may want to list favorable GPAs, specific courses that qualify you for this particular position, rewards and achievements, or even affiliation with industry related clubs or societies.

Make sure all of this is laid out in an appealing way with clear section headings so employers can easily skim through for the information they want to know.

When you learn how to build a resume that presents your talents in the best light possible you will find that you get more responses than you would from a gimmicky resume printed in hot pink cursive text.
