Resume and Interview Tips

Write an Effective Resume
By:Brian G Chadra

Everybody would like an award winning resume to present to employers. On the other hand, if everybody's was award winning, what would it separate it from the crowd. The hard truth is that not everybody has one of these papers because they don't want to put in the extra work or they don't want to pay somebody else to do it either. So what can you use to make your resume worthy of an award? The first and most basic is to use proper grammar and have no spelling errors. This is the number one complaint of most human resources personnel.

Probably half of all pages submitted have one of these two types of mistakes. Be sure to use spell check and have two trusted mentors proof your paper before submission. You're now ahead of half of your competition. Doesn't that make you feel good? Now consider writing a resume profile instead of a job objective. For example, don't use "Experienced manager looking for a mid level position commensurate with my experience." Why does that tell the reader? Absolutely nothing! If you have great experience, this is the place to showcase it. Why not state "Manager with 15 years experience supervising a group of 12 research and development engineers, capable of writing objective specifications and delivering a project on time." Which person would you call? You see, by stating your qualifications up front, the resume then turns into a gigantic sales letter promoting your career.

The balance of the document will then follow up on the profile, almost guaranteeing you a call requesting a personal interview. For instance, in the experience section, amend the duties you were responsible for by including action verbs such as coordinated, implemented and delegated instead of planned, started and told. These show that you were responsible for managing people at different levels, another piece of evidence that you are the right person for the job. If you are willing to put in some time, yours can also look like an award winning resume. Good luck!
