Resume and Interview Tips

What to Wear to a Job Interview - The Experts Know Best
By:Jackie D.

There is a heck of a lot of information available about all aspects of the interview process, from the application process to dressing for the interview itself. Magazines too numerous to name found at bookstores and checkout stands are filled with articles about everything a person wants to know about interviews and is not afraid to ask! Some articles provide a general overview while others are specific to the proper attire to wear for your job interview. Advice on how to dress is available for the taking or leaving, and my advice is to take it! Why listen to and follow this advice? For several reasons, the most important of which is it is time tested.

Advice Which Stands the Test of Time:

The best advice is that which continues to be recommended time after time after time. This advice is available everywhere: online, at libraries and bookstores, and in books and magazines, many of which are fresh off the press. Take a look everywhere. You will notice that some words are repeatedly used to describe how one should dress, words such as "conservative", "matching", "coordinate", "non-distracting", and "professional". Follow the advice which is constantly repeated. It is based on studies and anecdotal information of what works and what doesn't. Why a person got a job. Why another person didn't. If most of the authors of the articles concur that dark suits with a white pressed shirt and a conservative tie which coordinates with the rest of the outfit in a non-distracting way will creates a professional look (notice all those oft repeated words), then that is reliable advice certain to create a positive impression on the job interviewer

Job Interviewers Become Accustomed to the Dress Code:

The most appropriate attire which gets you the job is based on what people in the business world have worn for years. It was developed many decades ago based on the dress code of the time, and save a few changes here and there, continues to be the clothes of choice. More importantly, this dress code is what employers have grown accustomed to seeing at the work place. It goes to reason, then, that anything which does not closely follow the rule of thumb will stand out like a sore thumb. This is not a good thing, mainly because it will shift the interviewer's focus away from the dialog you will be having with them. And they are the person who will determine your future with their company. Again, based on studies, interviewers point out various distractions to the interview process. Some are dressing faux pas. However small they may be, they go noticed and are mentally noted by the job interviewer in ways which may result in you being passed over for the position you are vying for

There is much information about what to wear at an interview and most of it is the same. It is good information which should be followed. Just think, you don't have to think about your dress code for that ever important interview. The research has already been done for you and it has proven to contribute to the success of landing the job of your dreams. There may be little or no room for creativity, but you can leave that to the actual conversation you will have with your potential employer.
