By:Brad Grayson

When you are writing or updating your resume you should always consider the general rules of writing a good resume. Here are 19 tips you should follow to write a good resume.

1. Use a standard and simple font like: Courier, Times, Arial or Futura. Simplicity is the key.

2. As the size of the font choose between 11 and 14.

3. Keep the text line size to a maximum of 65 characters (letters, spaces and punctuation).

4. Don't use graphical elements, underlining, signs for numbering, bolding, italics or character shadow.

5. Use capitals for titles.

6. Align text to the left.

7. You can use vertical and horizontal lines but be careful as these may distract the viewer from the content.

8. Drop brackets and braces, even for phone numbers, these could make them difficult to read.

9. Use white paper and black font.

10. Use a high quality laser printer.

11. Print on only one side of the paper.

12. Don't shrink the spaces between characters. It is better to use another page than to huddle the content into one page and make it difficult to follow.

13. Don't staple papers in a resume.

14. Use terms specific to your professional knowledge. Employers often choose resumes that contain technical terms.

15. Write your name on the first line of your resume. Don't add anything on that line.

16. Send your resume through fax and for best results use the best quality setting, not standard.

17. Don't fold your resume, these can make scanning difficult, and so the text may be blurred.

18. If you send the resume through mail, don't make page distinction because the whole email will be inserted in their database as one page.

19. Don't send your resume as an email attachment, only if these is clearly specified.
