Resume and Interview Tips

The Keys to Making a Good Resume
By:Trevor Johnson

If you are currently looking for a job, you need to devote some time to making a good resume. Your resume is as important as your first impression, and if you are faxing it or mailing it to a company, it is your first impression.

Many people make the mistake of trying to jam too much or too little information on their resume. And some miss the important points altogether. Here are some keys to making a good resume.

First gather all of the following information: names and locations of all the companies that you worked at, the date you started and the date you ended. Write down your job titles and the duties and responsibilities for each position.

Writing a full description of the work you did at each company is probably one of the most important parts of your resume. Think about everything that you did and how it translates to your talents and abilities.

If you had to oversee others, you would have "solid supervisory experience." If you worked on projects with others you would be considered a "team player." Customer service skills are important in just about any position and the ability to troubleshoot and resolve problems is an excellent trait to include on a resume.

You only need to go back 10 years as far as previous employment is concerned. And if jumped around to too many jobs in a short period of time, try to pare it down and only include the most important positions. That is one of the first things that will send up red flags to a potential employer.

Your objective should be simple, one or two lines, followed by a summary of your qualifications. Make sure to list your college degree, seminars, trade school or workshops that would relate to the job you are interviewing for. Every little bit helps.
