Resume and Interview Tips

Resumes - Does Your Resume Tell a Story?
By:Brian G Chadra

If your resume is just a collection of facts and past history, consider it to be a candidate for the round file. That's right, almost all resumes without any style or meaning can almost be certainly junked without the benefit of a second look. How do you go about showcasing your skills to give a glimpse who you really are without sounding like a braggart?

Remember, a resume's one and only job is to get you selected for that coveted interview. In order to give the human resources person an idea of who you are, it is imperative to write a good summary (think story) about yourself. Don't just put down the fact that you worked two years in accounting at company XYZ. What did you do there? What are your accomplishments and how are they measurable? What about the cost savings plan that helped to cut expenses by 30% per year. Include these types of intangible in your resume to get noticed. Simple skills or duties are a dime a dozen in this economy. Everybody has experience to show, what makes your unique?

Another way to look at this is to consider the point of view of the reviewer. What can you bring to the company. Are there a unique set of qualifications that set you apart that make you absolutely vital to be brought in for an interview? What can you state about your abilities that nobody else can? Think about the total picture here instead of just a job history. Include all of your deeds and wrap them up into one jaw dropping resume package. Make it worth reading and not just skimming by including the buzz words from the job advertisement. Sprinkle them judiciously in your resume, but put the most important in the first two or three sections as these will be the most scrutinized.

Be sure to include your correct contact information as your phone will be ringing with recruiters wanting to contact you.

Now go write that resume.
