Resume and Interview Tips

Resumes - What Are You Leaving Out of Your Resume?
By:Brian G Chadra

Yes, the resume is a laborious task commonly left until it is absolutely necessary. You put all of your information into the paper, list a job objective, include duties at the last 2 or 3 jobs and finish with some hobbies or activities to round out your personality. That's fantastic, but you have just wasted about 2 hours because this paper resembles too many of the others competing for the same job. It most likely won't get more than a 10 second glance before getting thrown in the dumpster.

That's right, most human resources personnel are looking for a resume to stand out or separate itself from the crowd. Unless you know somebody at the company with an inside track, your resume will have to grab attention on its own. As you know, the resume is only intended to get you called for an interview, not to get that job. So what did you leave out? Here's a brief list:

--keywords from the job advertisement
--accomplishments from your last few positions (make sure they are measurable)
--a profile summary about you, not a job objective
--leave off hobbies, include special skills
--what you bring to the company
--why you can help the company

Have you got the idea? The resume is basically a sales page with the most important sales product in the entire world -- YOU! Think in terms of what you know and have done to help the company fill this most important position. If they were all set as far as personnel, they wouldn't be advertising an opening. How can you best prove to them what you are worth and the unique skill set that you bring from the last few positions? Make sure that these points are both objective and measurable. Don't just say you implemented cost cutting measures, explain that strategies employed from your team save a former employer 30% per year in some area. These are measurable and shows that you are to be taken seriously, so consider what makes you worthy and put that into your resume.

Good luck
