Receptionist Cover Letter - Why You Should Write Your Own
By:Mark W. Mattey

These days, it is quite easy to get a sample receptionist cover letter from a variety of sources, including books, journals, and the Internet. People who are seeking jobs as a receptionist can simply copy the entire sample cover letter and use it as their own. Most job-seekers who are fond of this practice think they can get away with it. The truth, however, is not as simple as this.

Every job, from a clerk or receptionist to the chief executive officer or CEO, always demands that the individual who wants the position make a strong and persuasive case as regards his or her qualifications in order for him or her to land the job. Before the hopeful job candidate can be interviewed, which is ultimately the means with which he or she can make his or her case, he or she must first secure an interview schedule, which in turn can only be done by attracting the employer with his or her well-written cover letter.

Most people seeking a receptionist job think that sample receptionist cover letters are perfect - free from flaws. On the contrary, sample receptionist cover letters are sometimes filled with grammatical errors or with clear-cut exaggerations. Grammatical errors are easy to solve, especially if you have great proofreading skills and are adept with the use of language yourself. The problem lies in using obvious exaggerations which you definitely wouldn't be able to pull off in real life. Some people who use sample cover letters, whether for a receptionist job or some other position, tend to employ devious tactics such as lying or embellishing about their qualifications, skills, talents, and/or past work experience that are relevant to the job they are seeking. Their employers can bust them through the performance they show when they already hold the position they so wanted.

Aside from this, sample receptionist cover letters are typically the same. Sample letters are generic; after all, this is what their name suggests. They are meant to be mere examples or guides, not the real thing that should be passed off to employers. They have similar content. Chances are, what one applicant uses will also be used by another, causing the same employer to doubt their integrity. The employer will get the impression that both applicants are unoriginal and lazy, and neither of them will get the job.

What's more, sample or ready-made, ready-to-use receptionist cover letters lack the personal touch that only an original receptionist cover letter can have. People who write sample cover letters don't know about each of the qualifications that their readers have. Thus, those who use the same cover letters end up limiting the way they promote themselves to the employer.

Summary

Copying sample receptionist cover letters can be tempting because it is easy and convenient. However, doing so can cause embarrassing consequences, such as having someone applying for the same job you are seeking present exactly the same cover letter as yours; having your employer harbor reservations about your credibility; or simply getting rejected outright. Using a sample receptionist cover letter can only bring you more harm than good; it is best to write your own cover letter to have a better chance at getting the receptionist job you desire.
