Resume and Interview Tips

Writing an Outstanding Cover Letter
By:Mike J Murray

A resume is a very important piece of paper. It determines whether or not you will be hired for a position, or sent packing to the nearest fast food joint. That being the case, it is very important that you write a decent cover letter. But what constitutes a good cover letter? There are so many different things that need to be considered when writing a cover letter, so let's talk about them for a bit, shall we?

Knowledge of the Company

What do you know about the company that you are applying for? Anything? If not, then you need to do some research, not just about the position, but also for the entire company. It might seem like a waste of time, but if you have made it to the interview process, then they will expect you to be well prepared. Being well prepared will help you to land that job. Here are the things you will need to find out:

- What does the company Do?
- Who is the company partnered with?
- Are there any pending mergers?
- What is the financial situation of the company?
- What is the status of the company's stock?

Some of these might seem a little pointless, but they can really help you out with those difficult questions. The company will want someone who can hit the ground running, and if your cover letter reflects that ability, you will most definitely be called in for an interview.

Variations of Cover Letters

Since the above is true, you've probably figured out that a generic one just will not do. It will help you out greatly to have a different one for each company that you are going to be applying for. Once again it seems like a lot of work, but it's going to pay off in the end.

Sell Yourself

You need to make them believe that you are a professional. This means SELLING yourself as a professional! Can you do that? Can you walk with that much confidence in your step? That's what it takes to get a job in today's world, and your future might just depend on it.

These are a few of the things that you will need to keep in mind when you are writing your resume cover letter. On top of all that, remember to be respectful, but not humble. Talk about the things that you can do, and what you are going to bring to the company if they choose to hire you. This will go a long way in getting you hired, and will definitely make you feel a lot better about yourself. So there you have it, the most important parts of designing your resume cover letter. But remember, the cover is just scratching the surface...
