Resume Writing - 3 Phrases to Avoid Like Death in Your Resume
By:John Newcomb

The resume is the gateway to your psyche. It is much more than a mere collection of facts. A potential employer with a good eye can spot more than your academic qualifications or previous work experience in your resume; he can gauge your entire personality in the way you write your resume.

If you are writing your own resume, be careful of using the same, tired old phrases everyone uses. These phrases have been done to death and stick out like a sore thumb. A potential employer looking through your resume would spot these phrases and immediately think of you as either lazy or not creative enough to make a more appealing resume.

What are these phrases?

How about "out of the box"? How many times do you hear this word thrown around in the office and in resumes. If you want to tell yout future employer that you can think "out of the box", you better find a more creative way of saying it. By using this phrase, you are essentially making an argument to the contrary.

Moving on, how about "team player"? This phrase is universal across all resumes these days. What it tells the employer is that you may, or may not be a team player, but you definitely can copy someone's resume pretty easily. Resist the urge to use this phrase. Instead, use something like "comfortable working with a large team", or "a natural fit in any team", etc.

"Go to person" is another phrase to avoid in a resume. Try replacing it with something like "was the preferred person to head special assignments". "Go to person" just sounds tired and overused.

Take some time to comb through your resume and identify any words that are overused. By simply repeating what every other jobseeker is putting into his resume, you are just blending into the crowd. A resume without cliches will undoubtedly impress and attract the attention of any employer.
